Question:
I've had panic attacks for years - yes you can get chest pains. You
should have your child get a good physical by a doctor who will take time
to give a complete examination to make sure there are no physical
problems. My oldest son who had Tourettes and ADHD also has some anxiety
problems.
He is on Imiprimine, an anti-depressant. This med. has also helped with
anxiety. He has experienced panic attacks - they happen so quickly. He
complained of chest pain a few times during them. He is a strong and
healthy boy. My other son developed some school phobia problems when the
work was over his head - he said he felt shakey. It was a short-term
problem.
Answer:
My panic attacks are not terrifying anymore - I've had so many and
learned good coping skills that it isn't a major problem anymore - just
annoying at times. My first attacks were terrifying-you feel like you
are going to die.
They would come on so quickly. The changes in the body and mind would
happen so quickly. I would feel lightheaded, I would perspire, feel
dizzy, confused, hyperventilate, have heart palpitations, etc.
I work with my oldest son on coping skills - he is very self-conscious.
The medicine has helped him. There are many excellent books out there
for more information. If the problem continues and there are no physical
reasons be sure to consult a doctor that can help your son.
Just had to ask the NG what they think of this. Makes me scared and a bit
antsy.
School calls and says that sonny boy has complained of a chest pain, so they
sent him to the office nurse and do the regular take temp. etc. So here's
supposably what happened...from the childs story....
He was doing his math, had a chest pain so teacher sends him to the office.
On the way to the office he sees "little gold dots in my eyes Mom". Fainting?
A different teacher helps him to the office.
I took him to the pediatrician because it just doesn't seem normal for an 8
y/o to almost pass out when having chest pains. Pediatrician says "Well,
I don't know what to tell ya'. His heart and lungs sounds good now" (Yeah the
5 min. he could spare from his schedule) and sends us on our way.
This is what I gathered, they had a fire/earthquake drill right before that.
I think the child had a panic attack, it made his chest hurt and he saw it as
black or white....die or pass-out. He freaked himself out, but how do I know if
it was really a panic attack?? Can anyone comment on what one feels like?
Physical symptoms? Should I insist upon further tests of some sort for
safety sake?
After the Dr. appt. we had his blood taken (1st time ever) and when he stood
up from the chair that look of fear on the childs face even freaked me out.
He instantly said "Mom that chest pain is back, it hurts. I'm gonna' pass
out."
Was it from getting his blood taken that he almost passed out again? This
happened AFTER he had the blood taken not before when one would *think* a panic
attack was going to happen.
I just worry because of the Cylert and really honor and respect most advice
and opinions I get here. Someone set me at ease please, I am a little upset
that everytime I ask or comment about ADHD I seem to know oodles more than
the Dr. or Nurse. Frustrating.
