Can Luvox cause a panic attack?

Question:
I just had my first panic attack after taking a small dose of Luvox my doctor prescribed for OCD. I did have pretty much coffee that morning, but I have always drank pretty much coffee in the morning.

My experience with that panic attack was terrible! I don't want that to ever happen to me again. I thought maybe I was going to have another panic attack yesterday but I managed to stop it and I was not on Luvox.

I am afraid it was not the Luvox that caused it and that I am going to have these the rest of my life. I also just found out that my father has suffered from panic attacks all his life and he takes medication to control them. I don't want to be on medication all my life for this. Is there a way to control them on your own?

Also I didn't pass out when I had my panic attack, but I felt like I might. Is it possible to pass out during a panic attack?

Answer:
I don't know about Luvox, but I heard some of the other meds can increase PAs until you wean onto them. Please talk to your doctor about that. I feel so bad for you! I know it's a terrible experience to have anx/pan. Feeling faint is one of the symptoms of PAs, but doctors usually say that if you didn't faint the first time, chances are you won't. Caffeine doesn't help either, even if you've been drinking it for a while.

I actually take Luvox for PA and have had great success with it. Di is right that some of the meds can cause an increase in anxiety intially, until you get weaned onto them by upping the dose very slowly. Call your doc. before you decide to stop taking it. Hang in there-it will get better.

Welcome to ASAP!! Sometimes when you are weaning on a anti-depressant you can have a increase in anxiety. Perhaps the Luvox combined with the coffee is the reason for the PA. Drinking alot of coffee is not good for anyone with any kind of anxiety disorder. I quit drinking coffee in August and I feel a difference.

I would call your doctor and tell him what happened and that you stopped taking the Luvox. Having one PA doesn`t mean you are going to keep having them. It is important that you think about getting back on the Luvox for your OCD, obviously your doctor thinks you need to be on it. What was the dose your doctor started Luvox at? Starting dose should be 25mgs, if you started at a higher dose than that, it could be the reason for the PA.

It is very unlikely that you will pass out during a PA. I know I have felt like I would, and in the 19 years I have been having PA`s I have never passed out.

I think the best thing for you to do is to put this isolated PA out of your mind. There is a chance you will never have another one.
