Question:
I had Panic Attacts for about 10 years. One time I got home I had one bannan.. It tasted
so good I had another that day I had 3. Since, as you know panic attacks come and
go about 2 weeks latter I noticed a decrease in my symptions but at the time
I didnt asociate the bannans to the lessening . 1 month later my symptons returned.
I dont know whats in bannans?
Answer:
Watch your potassium with all those bananas, if it reaches a high
level you can have a heart attack and possible die. Consult your doc.
Seriously, I have heard that bananas contain tryptophane (sp?) just like
turkey, which metabolizes as seratonin, which is that secret ingredient in
your brain that makes you feel groovy. You could argue that bananas are like
a natural form of prozac.
Bananas work for monkeys too. I never met one that has panic attacks.
Studies of anxiety in animals are providing NIMH-sponsored researchers
with clues to the underlying causes of this phenomenon. One series of
studies involves macaque MONKEYS. Some of these animals exhibit anxiety
when challenged with an infusion of lactate, much like people with panic
disorder. Other macaques do not exhibit this response. NIMH-supported
scientists are attempting to determine how the brains of the responsive
and non-responsive MONKEYS differ. This research should provide
additional information on the causes of panic disorder.
From what I understand sometimes anxiety can be caused by a shortage of
magnesium, calcium, and potassium. Bannanas are high in potassium. If
your anxiety was caused by a shortage of potassium, then bannanas could
of brought your level up and fixed the cause of the anxiety. I doubt
if this would work for everyone, but for people with a potassium
shortage, it couldn't hurt.
And Andy you are right. But it can also make you sleepy. Might not be a
good idea if this person were the pilot.....but since it doesn't sound that
way to me I see nothing wrong with it. My dad has ate several a dad for
years.
That's very interesting. I haven't had a banana for a while now. Bananas on
my next shopping list!! It doesn't hurt to try, I love bananas, and they have
potassium which is good for you. And...good for you too, to be able to do the
things you've done!!! Excellent!
It's a good idea to have you potassium level checked at your GP's office to
establish a baseline. I'm not sure low potassium levels can cause
anxiety/panic attack, but low potassium levels have contributed to heart
attacks, as can a very high level. One banana/day should not be harmful, in
fact most GP's recommend it for good heart health.
