Question:
My heart races
and it feel that I'm having a heart attack. Sometimes just the thought of a
hard task makes me overwelmmed with anxiety.
Anyones thoughts or comments would be well appreciated
or anyones first encounters with anxiety and panic attacks to tell of
Answer:
If all you have been given is a prescription for Xanax and
you're still feeling as bad as you say, I'd have to say that
it sounds like you haven't had adequate treatment. My advice,
FWIW, would be to go back to whoever prescribed this medication
for you and ask if s/he can put you in touch with a
psychologist who can help you with Cognitive Behavioural
Therapy.
For many of us, Xanax or a similar anxiolytic, alone is
enough. For some, however, there needs to be therapy as
well, IME.
Xanax is the best Rx for A/P attacks. You might discuss with you Dr. the use
of an antidepressant for use to stop them before they start. Both I and my fiancee
are on imipramine that stops my A/P attacks cold. If you read through the post
you'll find others that have had good luck with SSRI'S (Prozac, Paxil,...ect). Its
better to treat the problem than only treating the symptom.
What I learned was that thoughts cause the original symptoms. Over reaction
to the symptoms causes further symptoms, and a vicious circle of fear is
started, leading to repeated attacks.
What worked for me ?
Klonopin, 1/2 mg /day, it is far less addictive than xanax.
